Arrive in Bideford on the 1&2 Barnstaple-Appledore bus. Cross the
long bridge and walk up to the Tarka Trail Visitor Centre (signposted). Follow the Tarka Trail to Instow.
The geography at the side of this estuary alternates between hilly ridges and flat flood plains. The streams that join the
Torridge often flood in winter. They provide good roosting / feeding areas at high tide.
There is a small area of salt marsh under the new bridge. You sometimes get Grey Herons here. A
dead tree on the other side of the river is occasional used as a night roost by the Little Egrets.
(The best view can be from the MS Oldenburg when it is returning from Lundy. It cruises past quite
close to this tree.)
Instow is a good place to get some food before continuing on the walk.
Or you can catch the 1&2 Barnstaple-Appledore bus and go somewhere else.
