Distance 10 miles
We stayed in the excellent Treglos Hotel in Constantine Bay. The bus stop in
the village is just two minutes walk from the hotel, opposite Constantine Bay
Stores and the surf shop. From there I caught the 556 First Kernow bus from
Constantine Bay (10h04) via St Merryn (10h08) and Harlyn Bay (10h13) to
The bus dropped me at the old railway station. I could have walked upstream
along the Camel Trail to Bodmin, but I left that walk for another day. Padstow is St. Petroc's
Stow, site of a monastry founded by St. Petroc long before the Saxons reached
this far west. Viking raids eventually forced the monks inland to Bodmin.
Coastpath to Harbour Cove
After walking through Padstow harbour, I took the signposted route to the War
Memorial at St. Saviour's Point. The War Memorial offers great views back to
Padstow and across the Camel estuary to Rock and Brea Hill south of Daymer Bay.
The path continues north past St. George's Cove and then to Harbour Cove
where another twist of the Camel has produced the wide sands of Tregirls that
stretch out to the Doom Bar
The fields immediately north of Harbour Cove were excavated by Time Team.
They found evidence of Iron Age occupation as well as trade with the eastern
Mediterranean in Roman and Post-Roman times.
